Frequently Asked Questions
On a fresh install, water heaters last 8 to 15 years on average. However, after our water heater repairs in Kansas City, your unit may have a longer lifespan. There are two types of heaters: gas and electric, and they each last different amounts of time. Gas heaters have a lifespan of 8 to 12 years, while electric ones can last for up to 15 years.
Keeping your water heater in peak condition can help extend its lifespan. Pay special attention to the pilot light if you have a gas heater. You should also make sure the gas line isn’t leaking and that the vents are all clear. Meanwhile, electric heaters need to have all of their connections secure for proper function. Check the heating element regularly alongside the thermostat.
Flushing out sediment is important regardless of which water heater type you have. Routine flushes keep your tank clean, preventing buildup of debris. Keep an eye on your anode rod as well, as corrosion can deeply impact the longevity of your unit. Finally, keep tabs on your pressure relief valve by giving it regular tests.
Many of our clients report hearing a sizzling sound coming from their heaters. This is normal when your water heater is working harder. Colder weather usually means your unit has to put in extra effort to keep your shower hot. It can also make sizzling noises when it’s in high demand or if you recently installed it.
Another common noise complaint we get is for a rumbling water heater. Again, this may just be a sign that your heater is hard at work. However, a consistently noisy heater could be a sign of strain on your unit.
As the years go by, your heater collects sediment in its tank. This rumbling noise you hear is from the water at the tank’s bottom expanding due to heat, pushing against any settled debris. While this isn’t dangerous, it does usually mean that your heater is nearing the end of its lifespan. During our water heater repairs in Kansas City, we can determine whether we can fix this sediment buildup or if you require a new unit altogether.
Hot water may take up to 45 minutes to return after a new unit installation or heater restart. However, if you’re noticing changes in water temperature even when the unit has been running for a while, your unit may be having problems.
Call the KC Flow Heroes if you’re having trouble getting your water hot, even after over 1 hour of waiting. We can inspect your heater to see if there is a problem with its installation or if the unit needs new parts.
If you’re noticing consistent leaks or dripping, call us right away. This could be a sign of a more serious issue with the pressure system. When we arrive for your water heater repairs in Kansas City, we can safely diagnose the issue.
That being said, a little bit of leakage is normal thanks to the overflow pipe attached to the temperature relief valve. Occasionally, your heater needs to let a small amount of steam escape to keep the pressure inside the unit normal. This water accumulates in the overflow pipe and leaks out, which causes no damage to the heater itself.
